Are There Any Safe Cigarettes?

The ill effects of smoking have been the hot topic for discussion for quite some time now. With numerous health organizations and experts condemning smoking, a dip in the cigarettes sales was inevitable. To curb the dipping sales, cigarette manufacturers came up with what is known as 'safe cigarettes'. But, are these safe cigarettes really safe enough? Let us find out.

Typically, these safe cigarettes make use of filters. The filters help block some of the tar or the nicotine that a person inhales while smoking. As a result, the person smoking is inhaling a lesser amount of tar and nicotine, which makes these cigarettes safe as compared to the non filtered or 'unsafe' counterparts. However, this is the theory put forward by cigarette manufacturers.

Initially, several health experts too believed this theory to be true as the amount of toxic substances being inhaled was lesser. However, a recent study has proved this belief to be totally wrong. In fact, this recent study conducted by a team of researchers writing in Cell Cycle has found that these 'safe cigarettes' could actually be more harmful than the traditional cigarettes.

The study opines that these filtered cigarettes are more carcinogenic or cancer inducing as compared to their traditional counterparts. The reason for the same being that these cigarettes led to the formation of double-strand DNA breaks (DSBs). Double-strand DNA breaks (DSBs) are known to be one of the most important factors that induce cancer. This, however, is not the case with traditional cigarettes.

For the aforementioned study, laser scanning cytometry (LSC) technology was put to use. This technology is used to measure the damage caused due to DNA in response to the smoke from commercially available tobacco and nicotine-free cigarettes. A battery of genotoxic tests was also conducted in addition to the same.

This brings us to the conclusion that the safe or nicotine free cigarettes are not really safe. Organic cigarettes too are considered in the bracket of safe cigarettes. Laced with dioxide, they are apparently less harmful than traditional cigarettes. However, this does not mean that they are completely safe. They do cause some level of harm.

A cigarette is a cigarette at the end of the day. And, no matter what kind you opt for, it is bound to do you harm. However, the level of harm may vary from one to another. So, if you really want to lead a healthy and happy life, it is important that you say no to cigarettes, even the safe ones.
