Before discussing about the quitting smoking effects on body, we should try to understand the negative aspects of smoking first. Smoking harms almost every organ in our system. It is the root cause of a large number of deadly ailments. It causes soreness and dryness in the mouth, bad breath and increases the risk of oral cancer. It propels various tooth and gum diseases. Smoking is behind all respiratory diseases and lung cancer. It can cause liver, esophagus and other forms of abdominal cancer. It affects the spine and causes fertility to drop substantially. Smoking is also associated with leukemia, which is more commonly known as blood cancer.


When you give up smoking, you rid yourself of all these life threatening maladies. But nicotine is a great addiction and living without the supply of it may prove tough in the initial phase. It does not take long for the body to come to terms with the changed situation. The lessening of the level of nicotine triggers off a drop in blood sugar. So, at first the normal functions of the system are hampered. You may feel an increase in hunger and a sudden craving for sweet stuff. As you quit smoking, the oxygen level in your blood rises but the body remains oblivious to it. Hence, it needs more and more food to keep abreast of the new developments. It may result in temporary weight gain.


You may also be disturbed by an irritability syndrome. The mouth goes dry and nausea and light-headedness may occur. These last for a short time. Then the healing process of the body begins. It automatically rids itself of the nicotine and the mucus in the lungs. After three or four days the amount of nicotine comes down to almost zero. The body feels fresher but the yen for nicotine lingers. It takes sometime before you stop feeling the need of a smoke to boost you up.
