Are you hooked? If not then why is it so hard
to quit? Many of the ex-smokers admit that quitting smoking is the
hardest and the most straining experience that they have had in their
whole life. You may have tried very hard to quit many a times in your
life and for a few days or say for a few months, but the cravings for
cigarettes is such that you pick it up unconsciously. You may promise to
yourself that you would take only a single puff but this ultimately
leads to continuation of the habit all over again.
Cigarette smoke contains tar and nicotine and more than 40
carcinogenic chemicals. Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs, as
addictive as the cocaine and heroin. When taken in a small amount, it
gives pleasure to the user. But as the smoker continues to use it, it
slowly becomes an addiction.
Nicotine is present in all tobacco
products. It makes you feel satisfied, calm and more focused. As you
continue with smoking, you will need more nicotine to feel good in the
long run. Soon the time would come when you would not be able to feel
normal without nicotine. Without a cigarette in your hand, you would
feel incomplete.
Quitting smoke gets hard because with passage of
time it becomes a big part of your life. You enjoy holding and puffing a
cigarette. After some months, smoking becomes part of your daily
routine. You take to smoking in a big way in any of the conditions, may
that be:
1) While you are drinking coffee, tea or wine
2) While you are in the company of other smokers
3) While you are driving
4) While you are talking on the phone or alike
You do not get satisfaction unless you do not smoke on
the above occasions. The craving for a cigarette is the most when you
are in certain times or certain locations. These times or locations are
called triggers. This is because they trigger or turn on cravings for
cigarettes. Avoiding or handling these situations is the hardest part of
kicking the overall habit.
Quitting smoking is
not easy. It may take more than one try to quit. There are millions of
people who quit smoking for good. It takes a lot of will power and
determination to kick the addiction. Just pile that determination and
the results will be visible soon.
