Do's And Don'ts Of Quitting Smoking
Quitting smoking is an art. Many people do it
several times in their life. Well, they do it several times as they
cease cigarette smoking for some time and relapse to nicotine again.
After having a yet another date with nicotine fumes, they decide to quit
again and may relapse again!! The process goes on.
Mark Twain has also said: ?Giving up smoking is the easiest thing
in the world. I know because I've done it thousands of times.
But
had Mark Twain followed the rules of the quitting game, he would have
done it once and for all.
So here are do?s & don?ts of quitting
smoking to your rescue.
Dos:
Be positive:
Most of the successful smoking cessation programs begin in the mind itself.
But then, most of the negative thoughts also build in the mind. You
should never let yourself get bogged down by negative thoughts. Do not
give much importance to your past failures and/or your failing attempts
of ceasing cigarette smoking. Instead, focus on the positive sides.
Drink
more water and fluids:
Drink as much water as you can. It will
keep you hydrated, help you detox more quickly and work as a craving
buster. And you will feel much better overall.
Get more rest:
Once
you have quit smoking, you are bound to feel fatigue for some weeks. So
get as much rest as you can and enjoy this resting period.
Have
a well balanced diet:
As your body is fighting to shake off the
toxins from over the years, it needs more strength. And in order to give
it more strength, you need to eat a balanced diet.
Take multi
vitamins:
Cigarettes take so much energy from your body that it
leaves your body weak. In addition to a balanced diet that you would be
taking, you can also add a certain dose of multivitamins to your daily
routine. These would help you fight off the withdrawal
symptoms.
Exercise properly
daily:
Once you have quit smoking, you are bound to feel down. To
lift your spirits, start exercising. Make an exercising schedule and
follow it religiously. You can include things like acrobatics, walking,
yoga, meditation, swimming, or whatever you like. This will help you
fight off the cravings and would surely improve your spirits.
Your will:
The most important thing is that you should
have tremendous will power and determination to fight off the habit.
Without these you would not be able to get rid of it.
Don'ts
Do
not loose patience:
You generally expect yourself to be able to
quit smoking within a month. But, this is not the way it happens.
Quitting smoking is a gradual process. So, while you are in the process
of quitting smoking, do not get frustrated and loose patience.
Do
not neglect yourself:
When you are quitting smoking, you should
take extra care of yourself. You should be careful that your needs are
met comfortably. It will help you beat the nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
Do
not worry about the future:
You should not worry too much about
the future. Do not think: I would not be smoking one month from now;
this is the last cigarette that I am smoking; I will not be able to
smoke for now on; and the likes. All these thoughts are extremely
overwhelming. So do not worry about the future, pull back your wandering
mind and stay focused on your goal.
Keeping these dos and don'ts
in mind would help you not only in quitting smoking, but would also
prevent you from relapsing into the habit.
